โš ๏ธ Diagnosis First

Common Spindle Failure Symptoms

Spindles rarely fail without warning. These symptoms map to specific root causes โ€” catching them early often turns a full replacement into a bearing change.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Rising Runout at the Taper

Measured TIR drifting upward, poor hole finishes, inconsistent bore sizes. Usually points to bearing preload loss, front-bearing wear, or taper damage.

Risk: Medium
ใ€ฐ๏ธ

Chatter Marks & Ripple Finish

Visible vibration pattern on surfaces or walls, often at specific RPM. Can be bearing condition, imbalance, or drawbar grip-force loss.

Risk: Medium
๐Ÿ”Š

New Noise or Whining

Frequency-shifted noise, grinding, or howl during ramp-up. A classic bearing-warning signal โ€” running it further risks race damage to shaft and housing.

Risk: High
๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Overheating at the Front Cap

Spindle running hotter than normal, thermalarms tripping. Causes include lubrication failure, over-preload, contaminated grease, or bearing distress.

Risk: High
๐Ÿ”ป

Poor Tool Grip / Tool Drop

Collet or retention-knob grip force declining, fretting corrosion on the taper. Belleville fatigue, drawbar wear, or damaged gripper fingers.

Risk: Medium
๐Ÿ’ฅ

After a Crash

Even without visible damage, a crash can brinell bearing races and shift preload. A post-crash inspection is far cheaper than discovering it on a finish pass.

Risk: Inspect Now
Practical advice: record baseline runout, temperature, and vibration on every spindle while healthy. Trend data is the single best tool for scheduling repairs between jobs instead of during them.
๐Ÿ”ง How It Works

The Repair Process โ€” 6 Steps

No black boxes, no open-ended invoices. You know what is wrong and what it costs before we cut a single bolt.

RMA & Shipping

We issue an RMA number and crating guidance. Ship the spindle to our service center, or use our arranged freight with customs paperwork handled.

Intake Inspection

External condition, taper wear, endplay, runout, and electrical checks (motorized spindles) logged on arrival.

Teardown & Root Cause

Complete disassembly, bearing and race inspection, shaft/housing dimensional checks, failure-mode analysis with photos.

Fixed Quotation

Itemized quote based on measured condition โ€” approved by you before work proceeds. Evaluation fee credited to the repair.

Repair & Rebuild

New precision bearings, taper regrind or sleeve as needed, drawbar service, shaft repair, precision balancing, correct preload setting.

Run-In & Test Report

Controlled ramp run-in at full operating speed, vibration/temperature/runout recorded, final report shipped back with the spindle.

Advance Spindle Exchange Program

For common machine models we hold remanufactured exchange spindles. We ship a ready unit first โ€” you swap it in, send your failed core back, and production resumes within shipping time, not repair time.

๐Ÿ”„

How Exchange Works

  • Confirm your spindle/machine model and serial
  • We reserve a remanufactured exchange unit
  • Exchange unit ships with test report
  • Install and return the failed core within 14 days
  • Core is assessed; only repair cost + exchange fee applies
โฑ๏ธ

When Exchange Makes Sense

  • The machine is a production bottleneck
  • Every offline hour has a known cost
  • Your spindle is a common supported model
  • You can perform or source the physical swap

If the core turns out to be beyond economical repair, the exchange unit is simply treated as an outright purchase with a pre-agreed price.

Spindle Types & Brands We Service

Across machining centers, routers, turning centers, and dedicated grinders. If yours is not listed, ask โ€” bearings and taper geometry are universal even when the badge is not.

OEM & Independent Spindles

We service spindles from specialists such as GMN, Fischer, HSD, Kessler, Step-Tec, Weiss, Omlat, Colombo, Hiteco, IBAG, and Setco, as well as OEM-built spindles across VMC and lathe platforms โ€” using equivalent or specified precision bearing classes rather than generic replacements.

โ“ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can I get my spindle back?
Standard bearing-level repairs run on a 48-hour in-house turnaround once the quote is approved, plus shipping each way. A 24-hour emergency service is available for an additional fee. Premium remanufactures needing shaft or taper machining typically take 5โ€“7 working days. If speed is the dominant concern, the advance exchange program is usually faster than any repair.
How much does a spindle repair cost?
Cost depends entirely on measured condition: a simple bearing change and a post-crash rebuild with shaft work are very different jobs. That is why we quote after teardown, not before. You receive an itemized fixed price and approve it before work begins โ€” the evaluation fee is credited if you proceed, so the only sunk cost is shipping if you decline.
What does the 6-month warranty cover?
It covers the repaired work and fitted components against failure under normal use for six months after return โ€” including the bearings and preload work. It excludes crash damage, improper lubrication, coolant flooding from external leaks, and operating beyond the spindle's rated speed or duty. Premium remanufactures carry a longer warranty option.
My taper is scored. Does the spindle need replacing?
Often not. CAT/BT/HSK tapers can be reground to specification (or sleeved and reground) when the shaft geometry otherwise remains sound. Taper damage matters because it destroys tool-holder seating accuracy, but it is repairable in the majority of cases โ€” we measure and advise rather than replace by default.
Can you handle motorized / high-speed spindles?
Yes. Motorized spindles need additional work beyond mechanical bearing replacement: motor stator/rotor inspection, contamination checks, cooling-circuit testing, and careful preload and thermal-run-in management. These are routine for us; if motor rewind is required, we quote it as a separate line so you can compare against a replacement spindle.
How should I ship the spindle?
Retract or secure the drawbar, cap the taper, block the shaft from free rotation where possible, and use rigid crating with the spindle supported at its mounting faces โ€” never supported on the shaft. We send crating guidance with every RMA and can arrange door-to-door freight and customs documentation if you prefer, which also reduces damage risk in transit.
